Pickle’s TCAN Glory

Pickle passes the TCAN.

We are so proud of our home bred girl Pickle (Chanderhill Bit of a Pickle). She has done nothing but wow us since she entered our lives as part of our Ria (Rayaragua Ria Del Chanderhill) and Pato (Jericho De Aronagua) litter in June of last year.

She was Best Puppy in Breed at Crufts in March. Then in June she became the youngest Spanish Water Dog recipient of the Kennel Club Junior Warrant, as well as winning the European Junior Winner accolade at the European Dog Show in Austria.

But all of this is surpassed by her achievements in Spain this weekend. At Spain’s most prestigious dog show of the year, Talavera De La Reina, Pickle won the Reserve CAC (at just 16 months’ old) and then went on to become the first UK bred dog to pass the Spanish Breed Club’s Character and Natural Aptitude Test (the TCAN).

The TCAN was introduced in Spain a few years ago as a benchmark for breeders to aim for in terms of breeding Spanish Water Dogs with good temperaments and the correct natural aptitude for working.

It is a challenging test. But Pickle passed it with flying colours and is now eligible to compete in the Spanish working tests for the breed and to be awarded the title of Champion of Spain.

To become a Spanish Champion, a dog or bitch has to be awarded at least 4 CACs, one of which has to be at a special Obligatory Point Show. Talavera was one of these shows and it was fantastic for us to see Pickle coming so close to winning the Obligatory Point.
